One-offs and events volunteering
FareShare is hosting their 10th annual food collection with Tesco – the UK’s largest food drive. They will be collecting long-life food from shoppers in Tesco stores UK-wide on Thursday 30 November, Friday 1 December and Saturday 2 December. If you can spare a few hours to help collect food on any of the days above, please sign up for a shift at a store near you. In just 3 hours, you could collect enough food for 600 meals! Interested? St John’s Hospice is looking for event volunteers for their popular annual Christmas Fayre on Sunday 3rd December in St John’s Wood. You can choose between three shifts – or all day if you like. City of London Sinfonia is will be performing their first-ever dementia-friendly concert on Saturday 2nd December in St John Smith’s Square, SW1. They are looking for concert stewards to make the evening a success, and they are also offering all volunteers a free ticket to one of their upcoming concerts. Inspired Music and Arts is a non-for-profit group run by volunteers. They are hosting a Soul Christmas Spectacular music event on Sunday 10 December 2017 at the Electric Ballroom in Camden Town. All profits will be donated to Cancer Research UK.
They are recruiting a team of enthusiastic volunteers to help us with this very special event. The roles are quite varied and include: Event organising: helping in the lead up to the main event; Marketing activities: ticket sales, social media and PR activities; Stewards – helping out in the evening of the event; Setting up and Clearing Away. Brainwave, a charity helping children with disabilities and additional needs, is looking for a number of events volunteers on Monday 11th December for their annual, sell-out event, The London Santa Dash, which raises minded for Brainwave.
Individuals and companies from across London and the home counties will don on their Santa suits and run 5k around the streets of London. Starting and finishing at Old Spitalfields Market, Santas will also receive a cheeky drink once they cross the finish line. Roles are varied depending on skills, experience, interests and availability. They include for example, stewarding the route, registering participants, handing out medals and cheering teams as they cross the finish line and helping in the baggage area. They welcome volunteers to join in any time from 3-9.30pm. Individuals, pairs and groups are all welcome to volunteer on the day. Find out more and apply on the Brainwave website here.
Homelessness charity Food Chain is looking for volunteers for three seasonal events. The Christmas season kicks off with two Christmas Concerts on Saturday 9th December, 7.30pm at St Marylebone Parish Church, Marylebone Road, NW1 5LT and Monday 11th: December, 6pm at Western Courtyard, Devonshire Square, EC2M 4YE. Both concerts will be lovely festive occasions and a chance to raise the profile of The Food Chain in the local community, and they need a few volunteers at each event to shake those collection tins!
These will be followed by the Christmas Food Hamper Drive on Friday 15th December, 9am-12.30pm at Waitrose The Brunswick Centre, Bloomsbury WC1N 1AF. Volunteers will be asking shoppers to add an item or two from our shopping list to their baskets and then donating them once they’ve bought them. All of the items will then be packaged up as Christmas Hampers for their Service Users, providing them with some much-needed essential store cupboard items to get them through the festive period. They’ll also need a hand getting the items back to the kitchen, so a driver would be very much appreciated at the end! Interested? Full details about both roles are on the Food Chain website here.
The National Brain Appeal raises funds for The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square – one of the world’s leading centres for the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients with neurological and neuromuscular conditions. These include stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), brain cancer, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, Prion disease, and head injury. They are looking for a volunteer to support the fundraising team at events they organise throughout the year as well as supporting fundraisers who organise their own events. Including their Christmas carol concert on 14th December, dinners, lectures as well as their challenge/sporting events such as the London Marathon & Santa Run. Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day on Friday 15th December is a chance for people to show off their silliest side and will help raise vital funds to save children’s lives. Orchid (male cancer charity) aims to save men’s lives through research and awareness. This Christmas they are looking for Christmas Collection Volunteers to collect donations at tube stations across London. Stations include Holborn, Wednesday 20th December, 7am-7pm. Crisis at Christmas is most likely the single largest volunteering programme at Christmastime and they are looking for 100s of volunteers in a number of roles across London. They have a 24-hour residential centre in Camden called Winter’s and it’s in the Chalk Farm area. They also have a day centre in King’s Cross. Both venues (and beyond) are recruiting volunteers now. Hackney Winter Night Shelter operates out of different venues around Hackney each night of the week and is made possible by more than 750 volunteers at venues around Hackney. Winter shelter roles include coordinators, welcomers, breakfast and evening cooks, setting up and tidying up and a special need for overnighters. Under 18s are welcome to volunteer before the guests arrive. HWNS also needs year-round volunteers including admin, IT, fundraising and communications. The shelter is open from 1st November – 22nd December 2017 and 30th December 2017 – 30th March 2018. All our volunteers a training day with an induction pack and have in place a range of policies to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both guests and volunteers. Quaker Homeless Action runs their annual Quaker Christmas Shelter for the homeless at Union Chapel in Highbury, Islington. They are also looking for volunteers in a number of roles from 23-30th December. Have a look at the Quaker Homeless Action volunteering opportunities here.

The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to serve meals to people who would otherwise be on their own on Christmas Day, as well as involving volunteers in a number of roles all year round. Have a look at The Salvation Army volunteering opportunities here.
St Martin’s in the Fields in Trafalgar Square is looking for people to volunteer for the annual BBC Radio 4 St Martin’s in the Fields Christmas Appeal. Roles include opening post, answering the phone, helping with their appeal exhibition and even singing with their choir. Proceeds will transform the lives of homeless and vulnerable people across the UK. Whitechapel Mission helps the homeless all year round in their many programmes, and at Christmastime they are looking for a number of people (in groups of at least five and no more than ten) to prepare and serve meals in their day centre. Everything Else That’s Seasonal!
London Transport Museum in Covent Garden is looking for Christmas Host volunteers with commitment, enthusiasm and a passion for museum collections to support our excellent Customer Services team during a busy holiday period. Volunteers offer a warm welcome to visitors on arrival, assisting with the admissions process and providing visitors with any information they need for their visit. Supervising their collection provides an opportunity to engage with visitors whilst learning about the history of London Transport. They are looking for volunteers who can offer at least two days between 21 December 2017 – 1 January 2018. They are happy to discuss this further during the group interview.
- Informal group interviews will be held on Tuesday 12 December (11.00 & 14.00) lasting up to one hour
- You are required to be available for an induction and training on Thursday 14 December from 1.30pm – 4.30pm
Highgate Cemetery is looking for Visitor Assistants in the run-up and New Year to enhance the visitor welcome and experience. Your role will be making visitors feel welcome and ensuring their visit is friendly, enjoyable and safe. Highgate Cemetery is open every day except Christmas and Boxing Day, and shifts are on weekdays from 9.45 – 1.00 and from 12.45 – 4.15, and at weekends from 10.45 – 1.00 and 12.45 – 4.45. This role isn’t limited to the Christmas season, and they are always in need of more volunteers. However they do have a particular need for extra volunteers around Christmas when many of their more regular volunteers are away or busy. HOST UK is looking for Cultural Exchange Christmas Hosts to invite students to visit for a few days at Christmas so the student can experience ‘real’ Britain, away from university and heavy tourism — and so the host can meet new people and learn about diverse cultures from around the world. Hundreds of adult international students studying in the UK will be facing a lonely Christmas on a deserted University campus. You can welcome one or two students into your home for 1-3 days at Christmas, learn about their culture, show them your local area and traditions, and invite them to experience your own home life. This role requires a minimum time commitment 1, 2 or 3 days (evening 15th December – 31st December morning / afternoon), and is also available year round. RNIB is looking for a large number of enthusiastic volunteers to help with a couple of local Christmas opportunities. Christmas Collectors are needed throughout December at a number of rail stations, including King’s Cross. They are also recruiting volunteers to wrap Christmas presents at Foyle’s bookshop on Charing Cross Road between Monday 11th and Friday 23rd December in four-hour shifts. Cards For Good Causes is looking for a number of volunteers to sell fundraising Christmas cards at a number of pop-up shops between October and December. Local venues include St Mary’s Church on Upper Street in Islington and St Paul’s Church on Bedford Street in Covent Garden. Volunteers are needed for three-hour shifts and training is given. Looking to burn off those festive excesses and plant trees to replace the ones people are bring into their homes at this time of year? If the answer is yes, then look no further than Camden Green Gym. They offer regular volunteering sessions with minimum commitment, and maximum impact – all in the knowledge that you’re making Camden a greener and lovelier place to be.
