Nas and Jackie volunteer at the BTCV twice a week.
Nas had wanted to something similar for a long time, and after searching online she decided to go for this volunteering opportunity as it seemed like an interesting way of getting involved and giving something back to the community. “To anyone who is thinking of taking part I would say definitely join in,” she says. “I think we all need to put something in to the environment, which ultimately is good for our health. It’s also a great way of getting into shape!”
Jackie left her job as a teacher six months ago, and is now hoping her volunteering work will lead her down a new, exciting career path. She started working with the housing association – introducing a new recycling scheme and creating a garden, vegetable patch and wildlife area on disused railway land. She has spent the past month volunteering at BTCV, and would recommend the experience to any new volunteers. As well as improving her level of fitness, Jackie says: “It’s a fantastic way of meeting lots of new people, while doing something really worthwhile for our environment.”
